Audience Feedback
Today we finished gathering our material for audience feedback. We needed to get feedback on our rough cut so we could know what our target audience specifically wants to see changed or improved.
We wanted to collect lots of audience feedback in different ways so we decided to use multiple methods of research o find out what our target audience thinks of the rough cut.
We decided on three methods;
- Online Survey
- Paper Questionnaires
- Interviews
Online Survey
Question 1Our first question was about peoples first reaction since we'd need good initial reactions to draw our target audience in. The majority of takers initial reactions were positive with them describing it as creepy, scary and well made. This shows that our intended effects are what the audience are feeling. | Question 2For our second question participants chose the word they think best described the clip. The majority of participants answered with suspenseful, this is good because we want our clip to be suspenseful to fit into the thriller genre. One person said the clip was repetitive, this tells us we should try to vary more in our clip but we don't know what they find repetitive; there's no reasoning. One person also said they found it cliche showing it's stereotypical and conventional for our genre. | Question 3For this question we wanted to know which scene was the favourite of our audience. So we could maybe take elements from that scene to merge with other scenes to make them more appealing for our target audience. However we got a varied response to this question, with our park scene coming out best by one vote. This is good because it means all our scenes have separate appeal to them and are all good. |

Question 4This question was to find out why people liked particular scenes. Unfortunately some of the answers are quite vague leaving us unsure of which scene some of the answers are referring to. We did however find out that people liked the park scene mostly because it was during the day and was quite bright, they also think that the fact children were involved made it more frightening. | Question 5We also asked participants what their least favourite scene was in the clip. The park scene was voted as the worst scene overall contradicting to our previous results. This shows a mixed audience response, this is good because it means our video is appealing to a range of people. We have other methods of collecting data so we can compare this data with that data to find out what comes out as least favourite overall. | Question 6Explanations about why that was participants least favourite scene are again ambiguous. Overall people don't seem to like how dark or blurred the shots are however the intended effect was to make it more creepy because the images aren't as clear. We will attempt to make some shots more clearer and less blurred. |
Question 7This question was designed to find our what best created suspense in our target audiences opinion so we could incorporate it more into the video for effect. We found out that primarily people liked the superimposition and the discontinuity editing combined with the music. We think this means we need to put more focus on other elements to create suspense. We already have our footage so we can't change camerawork but we can use effects such as tints or filters. | Question 8We asked participants if they thought the video looked professional. The majority said that it either was professional or mostly looked professional and we just had to change small parts in order to take it a little further. We plan to work on the text for our opening and to try to get rid of the black frame around the video that appears after we render it. | Question 9When asked what would make the video better people mainly said that the black border around the video and the lack of text made it look less professional. There was also a comment about our radio broadcast sounding echoic so we plan to fix that particular piece of audio. |
Question 10We wanted to see if our narrative was reaching our target audience, there was a mixed response with most of them having an accurate idea of what was happening but some not clearly understanding the message. We decided to try to act on this and clear up the confusion a little bit. | Question 11We wanted people to single out a favourite part so we could see what was most likeable or memorable about our opening. A lot of people singled out the park scene and the superimposition, we also found a few people singled out the newspaper flashing on the screen for what they liked best. This shows us what's most memorable to our target audience and highlights which bits we should focus on more during the editing of our final cut. | Question 12Since we had no text in the video we highlighted this fact to our target audience to see what they thought. The majority vote for a either black or white font that's quite plain so it doesn't distract from the video. One participant said we should use a newsprint font, this is something we hadn't considered previously and an idea we quite like that we think could work. We want to test out this idea to see if it will look better and match the style better than the font we had chosen for the text |
Question 13For our final question we asked people if they would view the film if our opening was extended into a full film to see if we did our job or creating intrigue and suspense for our opening. Answers were all positive with a few participants calling it a maybe because they're not very interested in the particular genre of film we're showing them. This is a positive response for us because it means we're successfully attracting our target audience and giving them a product they want. | Question 14This was the last thing participants were left with, an option to leave any other comments they wanted to make concerning information we hadn't gathered. Mostly small thank you but one comment again about the black box surrounding the video that we have already been alerted to and will try to fix. |
We wanted to do an online survey so we could get a higher number of replies and therefore more audience feedback.
We used the same website from our last online survey 'freeonlinesurveys.com' and this is a link to the survey.
Paper Questionnaires
We also did paper questionnaires to collect our audience research. We did this so we could get some face to face feedback with specific people we know are part of our target audience.
We wanted to do paper questionnaires because with an online survey we can only try to ensure that people we're aiming our opening at take it and try to appeal to them through where we post the link to the survey. Whereas with paper questionnaires we have to ask the questions and can ensure we can collect specifically from the niche we want to appeal to.
We printed out one questionnaire to put all our results on so they were in one place, we kept tallies of how many people went for each option (photos below)
The filled out paper questionnaire
Interviews
In order to get a range of data we also wanted to do interviews so we can get longer more specific views from particular people who we know are our target audience. We also did this to get qualitative data as well as the quantitative data from the survey and questionnaires.
We also wanted to see if there was anything that our audience could come up with that we hadn't thought of .
This is our filmed and edited video from our interviews. We selected a few people who we thought would provide useful and interesting feedback for us.
Q7. If this was a full film would you be enticed to go see it after watching the opening you've been shown? Why?
Looks scary
I want to know how it ends
Intriguing
Interesting
Cool
Need to find out the killers motive
I want to see how the storyline plays out
To see if the films well done
