Ancillary Task Audience Feedback
Today we finished our official rough digipak and magazine adverts drafts, after completing construction of the drafts we went to get audience feedback on them. We chose to conduct interviews using a few key question, interviews were taken through social media sites. Below is a gallery featuring pictures of our digipak rough draft.

Interviewees were given the following information:
Front: Apple
Inside Panel 1: The Girl with the hood (somebody elses hands are taking down her hood)
Inside Panel 2: Line of shoes (Shoes in middle red, rest are black/grey)
Inside Panel 3: Girl playing guitar
CD Cover Horizontal Cross
Back Cover: Song titles on guitar strings
They were then asked six questions:
Looking at the digipak/pictures we have provided...
-
What is your immediate reaction?
-
Which is your favourite panel? Why?
-
Which is your least favourite? Why?
-
Is there a way you would improve it?
-
Do you think it looks professional?
-
What kind of music genre do you expect it belongs to
I interviewed five people for this feedback, interviews took place through facebook and were mostly taken by teens our age (since this was what the artist thought was her demographic).
I screenshotted interviews with 4/5 interviewees however the fifth interviewee requested we keep her name/face off of the websites and so we only have a transcript for her interview. The gallery below shows the screenshots of the interviews.

Interview#5: Female
Question1: It's interesting look at, each picture is interesting on it's own as well as a whole.
Question2: I like the line of shoes (Inside Panel 2) it makes me wonder why it's significant.
Question3: The guitar playing one (Inside Panel 3)it's a bit plain and predictable.
Question4: I'm not sure about the image choice (Inside Panel 3) seems to similar to the back.
Question5: Yes
Question6: Acoustic I think, from the guitar
In terms of audience feedback for our digipak it was quite varied, question one mostly turned answers of interest or thoughts about religion as a theme. This is good for us because it means our messages are getting across and our target audience are interested in our product.
Question 2 showed a vary of responses with only the disc/back panels receiving no votes, this isn't particularly surprising since they're not usually what people notice about CD packaging. Reasons for favourites included artistic value (Inside Panel 2) mystery (Inside Panel 1) or for imagery (front cover).
Question 3 had very clear results, 2 votes for least favourite was for inside panel 2 (Shoes) and were for inside panel 3 (guitar playing). People felt the shoes didn't make sense and the guitar felt cliche and wasn't as interesting as other panels.
Question 4 asked what interviewees would improve they all wanted an extra visual element, ideas we had were borders and adding song lyrics onto panels. Although borders would not really suit our artist or the digipak we thought song lyrics helping to establish meanings on some panels.
Question 5 asked about professionalism on the digipak nobody said our digipak unprofessional all agreeing it was professional.
For question 6 we asked what genre interviewees thought the genre was for the product, most of them said acoustic (due to the inclusion of the guitar, a reason we want to keep the image is because it helps to represent the type of music the artist produces). We had answers of alternative, rock and indie. This is good because it means we're being successful in using recognisable genre conventions and giving ideas of genre through our packaging that the audience is understanding as shown by this feedback.
After this feedback we decided that we would not change the planned images and would lay lyrics over the two panels voted for least favourite, we thought this would help cement their place and help the audience to understand their meanings. This would also allow the artist to represent herself more through her music, something important to artist of this genre.
After finishing our audience feedback for our digipak I began collecting audience feedback for our magazine advert drafts. We had three magazine adverts, two made by myself and one made by Jem, after finalising our drafts we gave them to Steph to make digitally as we felt it would give a better idea of our design.

To the left are our three final drafts for our magazine advert. This is what we showed our participants when doing audience feedback.
We showed our audience the above images and then asked them three questions about the magazine adverts. Questions shown in image to the left.

Summary: 1, Interesting, Professional Move stars/twitter link away from image 3, doesn't explain what they're advertising

Summary: 3, simple Remove blackened corners 2, too busy, no explanation

Summary: 1, professional, unique layout Remove twitter logo, move stars (names underneath?) 2, uninteresting layout, another visual element could help

Summary: 1, Interesting, Professional Move stars/twitter link away from image 3, doesn't explain what they're advertising
Unlike our digipak feedback we got quite clear results for our magazine advert feedback.
4/6 people said magazine advert one was their favourite, one person each choosing the other two magazine adverts, because of this we will proceed to take this design forward, to make our final draft with the actual photos. Peoples choices of this as their favourite appeared to be based on the layout being unique, the professionalism of the design and the fact it clearly states what the product is. As one of the reasons for disliking adverts was that it wasn't made clear what the advert was for as neither of the other designs had 'Album' written on them.
When asked what we could do to improve this advert people primarily said to move the text to fill up blank space and stop the ratings/twitter hovering over the images, as this made it look less professional. It was also said that we should remove the twitter logo to have just the link as the colouration of the logo didn't match the advert, this could cause confusion as to what the link is however we plan to use feedback on our actual draft to see if it could be a problem.
The last question we asked was about least favourite advert, advert number 2 got 4/6 votes primarily because it had too much going on, one participant remarked that it looked more like a movie poster than a magazine advert. 2/6 votes were for advert 3, people said there was too much empty space and not enough going on, in the future we'll consider the balance of text/image carefully as it was clearly a big factor in participants choices.
Our digipak/magazine advert photoshoot will occur over the next week ready for editing.
