Audience Research Music Videos
In today's lesson we discussed audience research within our groups, we decided that we would do a questionnaire to gather quantitative data as a kind of starting point to begin the research, so we had basic information before deciding how to progress with this information.
After the questionnaire we're going to do an online survey using chat forums and social networking to promote it and get the unmber of takers up more, we'll include a link to this survey on our websites. This year with our online survey we plan on using a wider range of questions and more complex question types.
We also want to do an interview with our artist to get an idea of what she perceives her audience as, this would also help us gather her thoughts and ideas on the video.

The Questionnaire
We wrote up a basic questionnaire in class and it was checked over by all members of the group so that we were all happy with handing it out. Because they're quite short, basic questions we printed off fifteen copies to hand out and as a group we each took five to get filled in, we had finished within an hour and sat as a group to tally the information and review it.
From our tally we found out that our audience is much more balanced out than last year where females completely outweighed males, however this year we have more males (purely in terms of our questionnaire results).
We can also see our audience (currently) made up of only 12-15 year olds, we will try to reach a wider audience with our online survey.
We can also see that most people watch at least some of the music videos for songs they listen to and at least some watch the entirety of the video. Both of these questions had very little people answering few, a good thing for us as we want people to watch the video.
The majority of people thought performance was the most common typology in indie videos with concept being second and narrative getting one less vote than concept. This shows us we should try to include an element of all three, even if short/vague.
All takers (except for one) said they expected to see the artist in the actual video which will be good for us to promote our artist.
The most wide range of answered questions came from the themes question, with Sadness, Loneliness and Conflict being the most popularly chosen themes to see. All other themes had between 3-5 votes, this shows us that we should perhaps look into using 2/3 of these themes and incorporating a less voted for one for our repitition (Neale: Genres are instances of repitition and difference).
The Online Survey
This is a link to our online survey
We knew we wanted a much more specific and in depth reply from those who were going to take our online survey, we wanted to get a range of questions about all the different elements and experiment with question types a little more this year. I made the survey on my account and after it was approved by the other group members it was published and sent out via social networking sites inncluding, facebook, twitter and tumblr. I think our Online Survey is well constructed and will provide useful feedback for us to use in our planning.
The Interview
We chose to interview our artist to get her ideas and opinions on the song we've chosen and to give us an idea of what kind of audience she expects/wants to attract with her music. The interview was helpful to us not only for informational purposes but also to get a read on her personality and see what working with her in the production stage will be like.
This is the video of our interview with Dion Gunn (our artist).
She discusses her audience and the motivation for 'Lord' the song we'll be creating a music video for.

From questions one we can see that like last year our target audience is weighted towards females, with females being almost ¾ of those who took the survey. Question two tells us that unlike last year the target audience is more spread out in terms of age, although half of the takers were 17-25, nine takers were 12-16 and seven were aged 26-35. However not many participants were above age thirty five, none of them over forty five. From this we can see we're aiming at primarily female young adults aged 15-25, this is our niche, I think this is good for us as we have a female artist who falls into the category of this niche.
Question three provides us insight into how much our audience is convinced to watch a music video for a song based on its audio, only two people said they weren't convinced to watch music videos that often with thirty six people saying they're convinced at least sometimes to watch music videos when listening to the audio. Question four shows us how many people choose to watch the full music video, 30 people said they watch the full video for at least half of the music videos they watch, this is a good percentage of our survey participants and shows us we'll have to be interesting with it to convince them to keep watching all the way through.
Question five shows us that only six people don't expect to see the artist in the video, this tells us we'll need to include the artist in the video to be conventional however if we want to do something unconventional one of the options could be to not include the artist. In question five takers said they'd most expect to see performance in a music video, this obviously being used across genres of music not just in the indie genre, we will include performance to conform to convention however we'll also include conceptual elements that tie into our narrative.
Question six in terms of how it's presented is a little complicated because participants were asked to order themes by which they thought was most common. Because of the lack of ease when reading the chart/graph I've condensed it into the average order based on the number of votes for each theme in each place. The list is to the right >>
Most Common themes in order;
1. Love
2. Loneliness
3. Happiness
4. Conflict
5. Death
6. Mourning
7. Family Issues
8. Comedic themes
This order shows us that the top two themes can be linked, this means we can include both intertwined to be conventional according to the research. I think we should and will make use of both themes playing off one another to add a complexity to the music video. The third theme was happiness, which juxtaposes the previous two themes, I don't think we'll make use of this theme in our production because of the convention of dark themes and ideas that the music video research supplemented me with. I think it would be out of place particularly since the song is about religion, something that is more often associated with violence rather than happiness.
Conflict, death and mourning were the next themes I think we're likely to involve some kind of conflict in our music video in terms of creating a narrative (Torodov: Narrative Theory) however we're not sure if death/mourning will be the cause of this conflict. I think playing around with the theme of death could be interesting to delve into although it is a very powerful subject. Family issues and comedic themes are the last two themes that were voted least common in the survey, I think this is correct using my music video research as a source for information. I think that although they would be interesting areas to explore they don't suit the songs lyrics or our vision of the music video.
Question seven showed us the opinions of the audience on the different typologies, they had to Agree/Disagree on some statements laid out for them. Narrative was the typology with the least positive reception, the majority of people voted neutral on the statement about performance being interesting to watch. Both concept/performance had the majority of votes on 'Agree' with their similar statement about causing interest. When asked which typology the audience preferred to see narrative was voted the highest for the audience. This shows conflicting views as people said they were neutral on narrative videos however they prefer to see them above the other more highly voted typologies. Based on this I think elements of all three typologies would be the best option for us to pursue, I think using all three will increase interest in the music video and also allow us to explore the different typologies.
Question eight told us that the tone of the song when combined with the video was what affected the video most above mise en scene, editing and camerawork. I think that we'll try to even out focus and balance the focus between the three technical elements because they are after all what creates the tone of the song when combined with the video. I think we should carefully consider all choices particularly for mise en scene since we plan to say lots in our opening scene with the use of setting and props.
In question nine we asked participants to choose what they notice most about a music video, due to the range of answers we had to collate them and tally which answer came up the most. The two most selected answers were the colour scheme and the artist, this tells us that these are two key areas that our audience are going to pay attention to and we should make these more memorable because of this. Luckily for us we decided to have a specific colour palette that will be reflected in the artists image, with primarily dark colours and bright red (that will be the focus of the mise en scene). Hopefully combining the two will help create our iconography. The other choices that were highly voted were; camerawork, mise en scene and the narrative, we'll balance out focus on each in order to make sure the audience can see the multiple elements to make the video more memorable. The list of the items voted for and their tallies are below.
Notice most about music videos?
Behaviour - I
Wardrobe - II
Camerawork - III
Mise en Scene - III
Colour Scheme -IIIII
Narrative – III
Artist - IIIII
Editing – I
The tally for the items most noticeable.
Our last question was different from the rest because it was just a question about what was most memorable about a particular music video. For this question it wasn't specified that it had to be of the indie genre, this was put into the survey to help us see what our audience likes and find most memorable about videos they've seen. They were asked to pick a music video, tell us the artist and title of the song and what the memorable thing about it was, he got a wide range of answers that I think will help us develop our ideas and see a wider range of answers/videos that they considered memorable. I think with this question seeing if we agree with the videos chosen will be interesting. The list of them is below.
Imagine Dragons – It’s time//Band is part of narrative, performance is embedded in the video
Katy Perry – Unconditionally//She's put in multiple scenarios
Hozier – Eden//Close Ups
Panic at the disco – Emporers new clothes//Everything
Pink – Funhouse//Wardrobe, make up, the special effects
Max – Gibberish//Special effects
Miley Cyrus – Adore you//Unexpected video for the audio
Lady Leshur – Queens Speech 4//Simple, eyecatching
Christine Perri – Arms//Shot of her from above floating on a bed
Lana Del Rey – Video games//Montage, done well on a low budget
Lady Gaga//Extravagant costumes, unique image
Foo fighters – The pretender//Interesting style
Jefferson Airplane/Dee Lite//Trippy videos, psychedelic
Devlin – The watchtower//Ending shot of car driving into storm, interesting
Eminem - Spacebound//Visuals
Wiz Khalifa – See you again//Storyline and the setting
Celine Dion – My heart will go on//Emotive, obviously connection with Titanic
Adele – Hello//The power of her voice
Taylor Swift – Wildest Dreams//Emotion and setting
Bon Jovi – Always//Memorable narrative, emotive
Gotye – Somebody that I used to know//Theme and events, interesting, unclear
Black veil brides – In the end//Setting of the video
Hozier – Take me to church//Memorable narrative, particularly camera switching between the guy rushing around packing and the guy burying stuff
Visible from the list above we got a range of answers to this question, no music video was mentioned more than once with the exception of Panic! at the Disco song 'Emporeres New Clothes' I agree that this video is particularly memorable in every aspect of it. It's very creative and the camerawork and mise en scene match perfectly, the make up used is incredibly impressive and overall I think it's very memorable as a video. Although a lot of the answers are varied I think it's helpful to us to see exactly what our audience remembers from music videos, we can use this list to see what things we shoudl put emphasis on during the production and editing stages.
I think overall we've learnt a lot from this question and in order to help us use the data properly I'm going to watch the videos mentioned that I have not seen to get a better range of ideas and videos that we'll use to inspire.
