2. Elbow - Red

Elbow is an alternative rock band from England consisting of five members. 'Red' was their first released single.

The music video for 'Red' doesn't really make sense until the end, this confusion and lack of understanding throughout the video helps the band to get their underlying messages about the meaning of the song through and encourages the viewer to look more deeply into the meanings of the music video. The video consists of what appears to be flying people, an elderly couple, a young couple, the band watching a fire from a red hall across the street and a series of ending shots of performance of the song and residents of the building on fire huddled together with firemen. The video is conceptual and about a friend of the band who was on drugs, the video amplifies the lyrics and shows the backstory behind the lyrics and what they say.

The music video begins with 9 seconds of shots where different people are jumping and twisting in the air, these shots are low angle and the people are almost above the camera with the only background being the sky. This creates a sense of confusion for first time viewers as there is no indication of what's happening, at 1:51 we see a zoomed out version of one of these people with a building in the background which suggests suicide and themes of depression and self destruction however later at 2:31 there's a long shot of a male figure falling through the air and it's revealed these people are jumping out of a burning building. This revelation makes more sense to the viewer and makes them feel accomplished for putting this together slowly in their head, these people jumping for their lives represent the innocent people affected by an individuals drug use. We can presume these would be friends of the person taking drugs and that in reality the band would fall under this category, this view would help viewers to relate to the situation and therefore the band (Uses and Gratifications: Personal Identity).

At 0:15 the lyrics begin and we see an extreme close up of a mouth and then straight after an extreme close up of an eye, this again creates mystery and makes first time viewers question what's going on and what they're watching. this also introduces the artist into the video since this mouth and eye belong to the lead singer of the band (and also the writer of the song).

Shortly after this at 0:22 we see an elderly woman and what appears to be her husband in the background, getting ready to go out. The elderly couple represent domesticity in a household, they would be the parents, the home life, those who see the worst of the effects caused by the drugs and although they do not fall like the others at (0:00-0:09, 1:51 and 2:31) they appear to be the ones most emotionally disrupted when stood outside with the firemen (3:03) and the drugs (represented by the fire) appear to scare (2:48) and shock them more than anybody else.

These very emotional and deep meanings are conventional for acoustic rock since a lot of the songs are about emotional issues and tell stories, which is why they're largely known for being majority performance in terms of their videos however this one is highly conceptual and tells two stories in an incredibly complex way.

At 0:18 we see a young female stood outside a red house, she is the drug addict, the drug is represented using a male whom enters the video at 0:53, the female is immediately enraptured with him and kisses him representing the first time she does drugs. The scene cuts away to show the elderly people and the band however comes back to the couple several times, later in the video 1:33 she begins to kiss him more and the scene gradually becomes more heated representing the addiction and how easily drawn in people are to drugs. He quickly becomes the focus of her entire world which is shown later when the two fall at 3:07 and 3:15, despite causing the destruction (the fire) she is only concerned about him and holds onto him as soon as he falls into the firemen's trampoline. The two are left in the video holding onto each other with the innocent victims and the elderly couple but do not appear to notice anything else. This particular message is unusually dark for an acoustic rock song since the majority of them have a faster pace and a perhaps bouncier feel to them, they're not usually this slow and melancholic.

The band are featured in the video through a series of close ups of the lead singer (0:56, 1:00, 1:20 etc) (Andrew Goodwin: Characteristics of a music video, characteristic three – lots of close ups) there's a wide shot of them all walking down a red hall (0:47) alongside performing the song the band are also featured representing those people who know of a drug addict and know what they're doing but just watch the destruction. They're essentially outsiders to the situation, however the use of the colour red in scenes appears to represent the danger and caution of those around it, this is clear of the young couple (representing drugs/addict) and also shown with the band, suggesting that watching it happen is also a wrong thing to do and that perhaps they should intervene. This further suggests that the innocent victims and the elderly couple are the only ones innocent as they've (presumably) tried to convince the addict to quit or taken some form of action against it. This could be the band telling the audience they should have reacted better since they appear to have written a song about the situation instead of doing anything to help their friend.

A male figure falls down past the screen in front of a burning building, suggesting he's jumping to safety and not to danger like viewers would have thought initially

Extreme close ups introduce the lead singer of the band and make audiences question his relevance.

The band watching represent the bystanders and those observing what is happening but fail to take any action, this could be strangers who know the female is on drugs or those who know of her connections with a drug dealer or in this case the band. It is using this the band promote themselves using this wide shot of them all watching the fire burning and the people falling one after another.
