Magazine Advert Analyses

In today's lesson we were briefed on magazine analysis, we'll have to analyse these to gather information on the conventions of these items to help us make them.

Below are the magazine analyses I have done.

I'm going to use a mix of artists, some of which I have analysed videos for so I can look at the similarities/differences and iconography to compare between the two different products. I also plan to use some artists that I have not analysed music videos for a variety of artists throughout all the analyses I'll do (including Digipaks).

Magazine Advert Convention Summary

I finished my magazine advert analyses today, I'm going to collate my findings altogether like I did with the summary of the music video conventions.

Instead of looking at camerawork, editing and mise en scene across them I'm going to look at images, text, information and layout of said information. These will be done separately with a paragraph explaining what each set of conventions means for us.

This gallery features all of the magazine adverts I analysed in one place for ease when comparing and looking back at during planning.

To the left is my collated data on the conventions of images, text and content (the blue headings).

In black are the different items/features/information followed by a tally of how many of the adverts had each item/feature/info. Written in red is the final number of adverts that used each particular item.

I'll use this to summarise conventions and reflection in relation to our production.

The majority of the adverts (7) used an image or illustration not of the actual artist, this is something we might consider, to choose an image relevant to the album name/album themesinstead of picturing our artist. I think we'll should do sketches/plans for both ideas and use audience feedback to find out which one is better. Only one of the adverts (Ed Sheeran) chose to use an inset image, in his case of the actual album cover however it was more conventional to use the album cover picture for the advert so we're more likely to do this.

Black was the least used colour of text (2 adverts), white (7) and other coloured text (5) both being used more than black tet. I think we may choose to use black/white text with a coloured image however we may consider using coloured text over the image if the image is particularly dark or in a black/white filter. I'd like to use a dark image with  a bright front to create a contrast between the music video (which will be coloured) and the magazine advert/digipak.

Serif fonts were used more often than sans serif fonts, I think we're more likely to use a serif font due to its more professional look and the fact its more conventional, I think it looks better as a whole on 'official' products promoting a musical artist. Although I do also like the idea of using a hadn-written style font. Solely upper case lettering was used in 4 adverts with solely lower case lettering being used in 2. 4 adverts used a mix of both upper and lower case lettering. I think we're likely to use a mix of both for professionalism and also to keep it simple as the majority of the adverts used quite simple fonts that were distinctive in conjunction with other elements of the advert. I think the use of purely lower and/or upper case lettering wouldn't fit in with the planned style we're going for with our artists image.

To the left is the most conventional layout of magazine adverts as shown by my research into them. The majority of adverts followed htis structured however some artists chose to rearrange some elements to make their advert stand out or to fit their style and image.

For example Elbow chose to place their band name at the bottom of the page filling up the rest of the page with reviews of their album.

I think we'll likely stick to the key information placement such as having the artists name at the top of the advert however we might choose to play around with the placement of other items. Specifically I'd like to mess around with the effects/placement of the image we use, I'd like to experiment with the layout particularly just to see what kind of things a less conventional advert could/should do differently and to see what we could make work.
