Lana Del Rey

The (only) image on the magazine advert is a close up of the artist, she (unlike the previous artist) is making direct eye contact with her audience, this creates a connection between herself and her audience (Uses and Gratifications: Personal Identity). She has her arms down by her sides, this presents her as being straightforward and taking her representation of herself seriously. She's wearing a white shirt and has relatively small amounts of make up, just enough to frame her face and make her lips stand out. In doing this she presents herself as simple in how she gets across her image/style. This creates the idea that her music is more complex and she seems to focus more on conceptual and complex themes as shown by her album name 'Born to Die'.
The artists name/album name is in a sans serif font in upper case lettering, this presents them as more important and as the key information, it also makes them stand out against the smaller serif text on the lower half of the advert. Her name is in white letters at the top of the page with the rest of the information in blue at the bottom of the page, this creates a colour scheme for the album and an inverted text effect(from white text on blue background to blue text on a white background). The use of this presents creativity and suggests a professionalism about her album as she uses a very simple editing technique to create a style for the album.
The album release date and singles from said album are in a serif font creating a more business-like, informational style. Which suggests that this information is more detailed than the name of the artist and the album. This also presents the idea that her music has more complex, detailed ideas as the font is less plain contrasting her name/album name which is much more simplistic, the juxtaposition of the two different styles of font present ideas of a duality behind Del Rey's music as well as contribute to a more complex look for the advert.
The artists name is the first thing seen in terms of layout, straight after her name is her image allowing audiences to link her name and her face (like in the Ed Sheeran magazine advert). The album name and information about it is put together in a small section over her photo. Underneath her image we see her website. Seeing her name/image first allows the audience to recognise and recall her name and face, information about her album being shown after allows for the more dedicated/interested fans to be more drawn in.
Showing her website allows her fans to see that she's available on multiple platforms and allows her to promote ways her fans can get more information on albums and tours etc. This presents her as using her image to be distinctive as it's quite a unique image when compared to other female stars, she has a very retro look and often quotes Priscilla Presley as a style icon. The inclusion of her album information and website allows her to more freely and widely distribute her image and style whilst promoting her music and work in the industry, it also allows her to create iconography as there are going to be certain elements and pictures that pop up across all the media products she releases/maintains.
Lana Del Rey is an indie-pop singer, I analysed her videos for 'Born to Die' and 'Blue Jeans' in my music video research, this advert is for her album 'Born to Die'.
