Elbow

Elbow is an indie/alternative rock band. I analysed their video for 'Red' in my music video research.  This advert is for Elbow's album 'Build a rocket boys!'

The positioning on this advert is very different from the other adverts I've looked at, all of the previous adverts has the artists name at the top of the advert so it was the first thing read however Elbow chooses to have their band name about two thirds of the way down the page. The first thing the audience are going to see is a quote from the Evening standard saying 'Another classic boys!' this is clearly a positive statement in referral to the product being sold, this will create interest in the potential customers whilst making them question what the advert's about. Moving down there's a series of 4/5 star ratings of the album, building up hype for the music because clearly it's very good having such positive reviews from well-known sources such as Q Magazine.

These reviews start and finish with a small quote from two different sources saying how good the album is, this is a nice way to conclude the reviews and also create more hype for the album because of how well its rated by popular sources, it creates a kind of suspense to see what the adverts about. We then see the bands name near the bottom end of the page, this creates recognition (or intrigue) based around the band, those who have not heard of them will likely want to find out more and those who have already will probably listen to the album to see if they like it. This will widen the bands reach as a whole and potentially gain them a larger fanbase.

The use of well-known dependable sources for the reviews (and the reviews themselves) present the idea that the band is legitimately good in terms of quality, and encourages people to buy. The word 'classic' particularly has very strong connotations of unique and long lasting quality since it's associated with things that are influential and stay relevant for long periods of time (for example Frankenstein is a classic in gothic literature and film). They represent the band/music as great which in turn shows the band want the music they produce to be the most important element of their career instead of their image being more important like in the pop genre. This highlights their genre as other adverts I've looked at also put more emphasis on the representation of the music rather than the artists image.

The style of the poster is very unique, the text is lower case with the exception of the review source names (eg. The Independent) this isn't something many artists do differentiating Elbow from other indie artists in the music industry. The use of purely lower case letter is unconventional this is the first time I've seen it in a magazine advert. The font is serif, usually connoting a professionalism however due to the lack of capital letters it creates a different effect, representing the artist as experienced with their image and clear in what they are doing and what they want to, shown by the unconventional design ideas in the advert.

The bands unique style is also present in the use of colour on the advert, the page is pale blue with a painted picture of what looks like a person wearing a pale yellow headband. The advert then has primarily black text with the artists name in a dark red colour, the mix of colour is distinctive as it's not a regularly seen mix. Often artists mix complimentary colours using similar colour shades/tones to create their image however Elbow has a mix of colours and shades that aren't usually put together for style purposes. The distinctive unique image they have is reinforced by the use of watercolour paints to create the illustration on the front of their album cover (the blue man). The use of various unconventional elements/style choices makes Elbow very different from other artists which is beneficial to them but also could potentially fragment their audience and mean they have a much smaller fanbase because of the lack of convention.

Although Elbows unconventional colour scheme is interesting and different from other adverts I've looked at I think we're more likely to stick with a more conventional limited colour palette with primarily dark colours and one or two bright colours mixed in for a contrast and to help create iconography for our artist.
