Kasabian

Kasabian is an indie rock band, I didn't analyse one of their videos in my previous research. Kasabian is their self titled debut album released in 2004.

This advert is the only one to feature purely black and white text/images, this is a very bold choice and creates contrast between the background and text/images. It's very simplistic and suggests plain, dark themes of the music produced by the band. The suggestion of dark themes is reinforced by the image used on the advert, it's of a person who is covering their mouth/nose with some kind of scarf/bandanna, we can only see half of the uncovered face. This connotes themes of rebellion as covering the face with a scarf is something often seen during rebellions or more commonly riots. It also connotes mystery/secrets by covering half of the lit up face suggesting hidden messages within the bands music, this represents the band as simple in their aesthetic but not with their actual music and what it means/represents.

The text is all upper-case lettering in a sans serif font, all the text is in white keeping with the black/white style. This creates a very bold look, using the contrast between the bright white and the dark black colours to create an advert that stands out and highlights the bands unique style/iconography. The band is not featured on the advert they instead chose to use a John Doe, using an anonymous figure represents them as trying to communicate messages for these people, those who aren't widely recognised, they're aligning themselves with those people who may feel unimportant or not significant. This will connect the band more strongly to their audience (Uses and Gratifications: Personal Relationships/Identity).

As typical of the magazine adverts I've analysed the bands name is in the largest font at the very top of the advert, alerting the audience to what and who the adverts about. Underneath this in small lettering is the bands website, this will widen audience reach and is often seen on adverts however usually at the bottom of the page. The placement of the website suggests that the website is a better representation and an asset to the band and that they want as many people as possible to visit it in an attempt to gain a bigger audience. The image taking up the majority of the space is underneath this text, it's the main focus of the advert suggesting it tells the most about the band than the other information on the poster.

Underneath the image is some smaller text, in the same font and upper-case again, announcing that 'Kasabian' as well as the band name is the name of their debut album, the use of the word debut connotes a new, fresh kind of sound because it's their first album. After this there's a few of their singles from the album highlighted so audiences recognise the songs and will hopefully be enticed to listen to the rest of the album creating them new fans and therefore increasing their popularity.

The last bit of information at the very bottom of the advert is the different formats/versions of the album that their audience can buy, the inclusion of these allows fans more choices when buying their product. The inclusion of 'Limited Edition' creates a kind of urgency to buy since it's limited and won't be available continually unlike the regular version of the album. This will encourage Kasabian fans to buy much quicker allowing them to sell out faster and make more money through their products.
