Florence and the Machine

Florence and the machine is an indie-rock band, I didn't analyse one of their music vidoes nor a magazine advert promoting them.

Panel 1: The front of the digipak, with the lead singer looking left
Panel 2: The CD itself
Panel 3: The image of the lead singer in black and white
Panel 4: The back of the digipak, with the lungs and song titles

Panel 1
Panel 2
Panel 3
Panel 4

Panel one of this digipak features a close up of the lead singer of the band, the image has a black border and the name of the band is above the picture whereas the album title is laid on it. She's looking to the side avoiding eye contact suggesting modesty, her hands are up by her head and shoulder in odd positions suggesting it's a still of a moving person, she has plastic lungs underneath her shirt, clearly outside of her body this is the title of the album and the two are clearly linking being very explicit in the iconography for the album. The image is in subdued colours, it looks like it's been tinted blue and the saturation has been turned down on the image to create a vintage style (Seen in many of the magazine adverts) this creates a distinctive style for the album.

The lead singer is again pictured on panel three except this time with her arms wrapped around her looking at something off-screen, the image is in black and white changing style from the front of the album, this could be in reference to one of the music videos from the album or could represent that she's flexible in terms of her image. By doing this she creates different effects and tones widening her emotional range and her image, this can allow her to connect with a wider audience of people as she's showing herself in different ways that still keep to her genre style.

Panel three shows the CD, it features the album titles in the same typography as the album cover, it has what looks like a painting on it of somebody crushing something in their hand. This could potentially be anything it looks like a fruit but is unidentifiable, the style of painting again creates a new effect and the image relates ideas of pain (in the crushing of something) and expression of it. The painting looks rather yellowed and again creates a kind of vintage style about the album.

Panel four is different to the rest as it seems much more modern in terms of style, it's black and white and features what looks like an x ray of a pair of lungs. The lack of colour presents a seriousness about the image perhaps suggesting that the song titles are important in what they say about the album. This again changes the style from the previous panels whilst still retaining the very distinctive image of Florence and the machine.

Along with the style of the images the text varies from panel to panel, the band name is in a sans serif font, in a hand written style, using both upper-case and lower-case lettering, this would've been established before and presumably is part of the bands iconography. The album title however is in a serif font all in capitals, perhaps presenting the album and tone of through typography, it looks much more professional and less personal opposing the band name. The song titles are in a serif font and all upper-case once again, losing a personal touch but gaining a clearer more professional tone to the album. All the text however is in white likely for practical reasons due to the dark/coloured backgrounds that the text is laid over.
